Collection of large original printed broadsides of Massachusetts governors each proclaiming Thanksgiving, or a day of Fasting, Humiliation and Prayer.  They include the years 1813, 1815, 1819, 1825, 1826, 1829, 1836, 1837, 1847, 1848, 1850, 1851, (2)  1852 (2)  1853 and 1854. For the years 1851 and 53 there are one for thanksgiving, and another for a day of fasting etc. The text on each differs and consists largely of flowery commentary and thanks for the bounty, prosperity, peace and harmony etc  provided to the inhabitants of the Bay State, and to give thanks for such by celebrating with Thanksgiving and Prayer, with the added caveat “God save the commonwealth”.  Great examples of 19th century typography, printing and great for display, each measuring approximately  19x24”. 

Signed in type by each governor with the state crest at the top of each. One should be displayed at the Thanksgiving dinner table to honor our past celebrants. Would probably be pretty difficult to assemble a collection of these today. Provenance: The Calvin Otto Collection
