Scarce original printings of what was probably the first journal of African-American higher education – published at the first historically Black college in America.
Published during and after World War II (the final issue was June 1947), the Negro College Quarterly differed from the older and more general Journal of Negro Education by publishing essays of specific interest to educators at historically Black colleges, including how these colleges progressed in wartime; teaching courses for Black students on economics, advanced technical training and dramatic stagecraft; social issues such as the contribution of Black musicians to inter-racial relations and the educational future of Negro war veterans. Very uncommon in these original printings; most institutions hold only microfilm or 1970s reprints.
