The is Webster's principal scientific work, a discussion of he formation of the island and an examination of the custom of the people of the Azores, he is best remembered for committing one of the most sensational murders of the 19th century. In 1847 Webster borrowed $400 from George Parkman, securing the loan with a cabinet of minerals. When Webster turned the minerals over to another party for a second loan, Parkman became incensed, argued with Webster, and then disappeared. Parkman's bones were discovered in Webster's laboratory, and after a sensational trial, Webster was hanged.
