Encyclopedia of African Methodism (cover title) / 1816-1916 Centennial Encyclopedia of the African Methodist Episcopal Church… (Philadelphia, 1916) First edition; a second printing was not published until 1947 (and despite “Vol.1” printed on front cover, this was the only volume ever issued) Original red cloth binding variant (a copy in blue cloth, with apparently identical text, was sold in these Galleries last year). 387pp.+ index. 

Profusely illustrated. Containing some 500 invaluable biographies of clergy and lay leaders of the Church, commemorating the 100th anniversary of this important institution of African-American society before and after the Civil War. Wright,  the first Black Ph.D. graduate, in the new field of Sociology, at the University of Pennsylvania. was later President of Wilberforce University as well as a Bishop in the A.M.E. Church.
