Captain Tenedor Ten Eyck, commanding Fort Philip Kearny, writes to Captain John J. Adair, Acting Assistant Adjutant General of the Mountain District D.P., making a “report of Indian depredations committed in the vicinity of this Post… a wood party had been attacked by Indians about (1) o’clock P.M. and a detachment of (5) men belonging to the choppers… were instantly surrounded by a body of about one hundred (100) Indian… The main party of choppers… succeeded in recovering one of the dead Bodies which was scalped and horribly mutilated the other (owing to the superiority of the enemys numbers) was left in their hands…  A guard of (8) men froom the 2d Batt. 18th Inf. Was immediately sent to their relief…”
