2 page autograph letter, on both sides of his Houghton House stationery. With original hand-addressed envelope. Approximately 6¾x4¼" visible. Framed with both sides visible, overall 14½x7¾".

The famed illustrator writes Miss Hester Everard of Detroit, Michigan (in full): "Dear Miss Everard. The drawing you have, was made many years ago (I am not quite sure of the date - but about 1904.5.6.). I have no record but my memory. I made it to illustrate a fairy story, with which it appeared in the "Graphic" (a Londond Weekly journal). And so far as I remember, the man in the picture was bewitched so that he could not hold up his head. What then happened, I cannot say except that I am fairly sure it all came out right in the end. I was very interested to see its photograph again. I had quite forgotten it. Judging from the manner I think I must have been illustrating Rip Van Winkle at the time (1904-5). And I think the old witch really is rather nice. What the name (or author) of the story was I have no recollection at all. With many thanks for your most kindly expressed appreciation of my work. [?] are for my sincerest, Arthur Rackham." The letter is dated 26 Aug./27.
