What I Saw in California: Being the Journal of a Tour, by the Emigrant Route and South Pass of the Rocky Mountains, Across the Continent of North America, the Great Desert Basin, and Through California, in the Years 1846, 1847

Bryant, Edwin

New York

D. Appleton

480 pp. Wood-engraved frontispiece map; folding hand-colored lithographed map by J.H. Colton. (8vo) 18.3x11.5 cm (7¼x4½"), original blindstamped cloth, spine lettered in gilt. Fifth Edition.

This is the first of the numerous editions of Bryant's important first-hand account of travels to the far west to contain the `small woodcut map' of the gold region, although there were more general maps in two earlier editions. It also contains Colton's important map of the west, which was issued in some copies of Bryant's work starting with the third edition, as well as in other works and separately. Graff notes that "Although this is a faithful account of an overland journey, its usefulness was marred because there was no map. The lack was supplied starting with the fifth Edition." Wagner-Camp notes a map of California in the second English edition, and a map of the west in the third American edition, but this fifth edition is the first to contain the "untitled map of California Gold Region." Also in this copy is Colton's "Map of California, Oregon and Texas and the Territories Adjoining with Routes, &c.," lithographed with the gold region of California colored yellow (52x45 cm. incl. dec. border). It was issued with the third American edition of Bryant as well as other works, but is not noted as being issued with the present edition, although there seem to have been exceptions, as in this case. The frontispiece map also appeared in the American edition of J. Tyrwhitt Brooks (Vizetelly) which was published by Appleton

Provenance: Schoyer's, 11/05
