Title:
Miners and Travelers' Guide to Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, and Colorado. Via the Missouri and Columbia Rivers. Accompanied by a General Map of the Mineral Region of the Northern Sections of the Rocky Mountains
Author:
Mullan, John
Place:
New York
Publisher:
W.M. Franklin
Date:
1865
Description:

163 pp. Large hand-colored folding lithographed map. (12mo) 18.5x11.5 cm (7¼x4¾"), original blindstamped cloth, spine lettered in gilt. First Edition.

Important source on the early gold discoveries made in western states other than California and Nevada, with advice for the traveler including a day-by-day itinerary of the route from Fort Benton, on the Missouri River, through the mountains to Walla Walla in Washington Territory. Streeter notes that "one of the best features of the Guide is its `Addenda' at pp. [89]-153 which is devoted primarily to the then recent developments in gold and silver mining in Idaho. There are many extracts from contemporary newspaper accounts. The large folding map is helpful and important." The map is titled "General Map of the Northern Pacific States and Territories belonging to the United States and of British Columbia, extending from Lake Superior to the Pacific Ocean and between latitude 39º and 53º north, exhibiting mail routes, gold mines, and including the most recent surveys..." (57.5x95 cm). Wheat lauds the "very fine General Map of the north Pacific States... Freyhold had drawn Mullan's overall map of 1863, but this is an entirely new production, with a larger range, as set forth in its title. It will be seen that Mullan and Freyhold, like other map makers of 1865, were seduced by the new idea, Wyoming, represented on their map rather more correctly than by the others this year - the General Land Office included. Generally over the West, the Mullan-Freyhold map is interesting and sometimes surprising for its showing of trails." With the bookplate of the Ayer Collection, Newberry Library, and withdrawn label.
