Engraved map, hand-colored. 116x155 cm (45¾x61"), sectioned & backed with linen for folding; original half morocco & marbled boards folder (split in two along front joint).
Tanner's landmark map of the United States as it was in 1829, extending beyond the Mississippi into present Kansas, Oklahoma, Nebraska, etc., as issued in the original half morocco folder. The map was sold with Tanner's "Memoir of the Recent Surveys, Observations, and Improvements, in the United States... Intended to Accompany His New Map of the United States." A copy of the 1829 first edition of the Memoir is included (old marbled board, modern cloth spine). Phillips Maps lists later editions of 1830, 1832, 1839. There are 16 insets including city plans and environs, the southern portion of Florida, Oregon and the Mandan District, etc. Also, there are profiles, sections, and a table of statistics of the United States. The pictorial cartouche features two deer in the woods.
