Scarce work containing eight notices: Sailing directions for the Western coast, from Monterey to Columbia river, by Lieutenants William P. McArthur and Washington Bartlett, both of the U.S. Navy; Description of islands and rivers between the harbor of Monterey and the mouth of the Columbia river, by McArthur; Sailing directions for entering Columbia river, by McArthur; Notes on the new chart of Columbia river, by McArthur; On the draught of the vessels which can enter the south channel of Columbia river, by Bartlett; Report... on the lights necessary for San Francisco bay and its approaches, by McArthur and Bartlett; Report... in relation to a light-house at Cape Hancock or Disappointment, by Bartlett; and Report... in relation to a light-house at Cape Flattery and New Dungeness, by McArthur. The sailing directions did not appear on the first issue of the U.S. Coast Survey maps of the West Coast dated 1850. They appear on the 2nd issue, also dated 1850, and on the 3rd issue, dated 1851. With ink signature of Lewis A. McArthur, December 1898, to the top of the front wrapper. Lewis, knows as "Tam" McArthur, was the grandson of William P. McArthur - 16 years old in December 1898, he was to become an executive for Pacific Power and Light Company, and was also the secretary for the Oregon Geographic Board for many years and the author of Oregon Geographic Names, a standard reference book on the subject.
