Approximately 150 leaves. Nearly 250 ink drawings of banners and shields, all delicately colored by hand. (Small folio) 29x22 cm (11½x8¾") old full tan morocco, paneled in gilt, armorial device within a six-pointed star at board centers, spine gilt, all edges gilt.

The arms on the binding of those of George Granville Francis Egerton, 2nd Earl of Ellesmere. The manuscript title page reads: "Thorold's Illustrated Edition of Sir John Prestwich's Respublica; or the Gallery of Pictorial Banners!...Being an Elaborate Display of the Honours and Ensigns of the Commonwealth. Including all the names, armorial bearings, flags and pennons of the various naval and military commanders in that state." The illustrations display a large degree of skill on the part of the artist. A manuscript note by an earlier owner states that a photostatic copy of this manuscript was specially made for the Guildhall Library of the City of London.
