Beckmann, Max

Drypoint etching. 23.7x29.7 cm (9½x11¾") on larger sheet, approximately 30x37 cm (11¾x14½"), tipped to matting. One of 60 on laid paper.

Signed at lower right, publisher's embossed stamp below. Plate 17 from Beckmann's 1919 portfolio Gesichter (Faces). Glaser 98; Gallwitz 86; Hofmaier 108. Provenance: The estate of Aaron Sopher, Baltimore artist and associate of Max Beckmann and George Grosz.

Max Beckmann (German, 1884–1950) was a painter, draftsman, printmaker, sculptor, and writer. Although he is classified as an Expressionist artist, he rejected both the term and the movement. Beckmann achieved great success during the years of the Weimar Republic but his fortunes changed with the rise to power of the Third Reich. His work was considered degenerate by Adolph Hitler and Beckmann was dismissed from his teaching position at the Art School in Frankfurt. He left Germany for the Netherlands and later the United States.
