Inscribed and signed on front free endpaper: “To Oren Root, Jr., Esquire, an uncompromising defender of freedom, I have writ this reaffirmation of our American Heritage. With deep respect, Sadie M. Alexander. November 20, 1947, Philadelphia, Pa.” Superb association copy of a momentous document. Created by President Truman in 1946, after a year of discussion and debate, the President’s Committee made 22 pages of recommendations for ending segregation and racial discrimination in American life and protecting the civil rights of minorities (including Japanese-Americans held in detention camps during the World War). Its most significant proposal was “to end immediately all racial and ethnic “discrimination and segregation” in “all branches of the Armed Services”; this led directly to Truman’s 1948 order prohibiting segregation in the Army, Navy and Air Force. Of the 15 Committee members, only two were African-American, and only one of these was a woman - Sadie Tanner Mossell Alexander (1898-1989), economist and attorney, one of the first three Black women to receive a Ph.D. in the United States as well as the first Black woman lawyer in Pennsylvania. The fellow attorney to whom she inscribed this book was a prominent liberal Republican in New York City.
