Manuscript quartermaster ledger for a volunteer infantry company at the time of the Spanish-American War, which saw service in Cuba

April 26, 1898 to Oct. 27, 1899

277 pages filled out in ink, plus about 90 unused pages at end. 27x14 cm (14½x6"), buckram.

Very interesting and revealing quartermaster ledger dating from the opening days of the Spanish American War, detailing the outfitting of the 4th Illinois Volunteer
Infantry, Company G, which served in the conflict and were part of the occupying force in Cuba during the first few months of 1899. Most of the entries begin on April 26, 1898, one day after Congress declared war, and the rush to participate in the conflict was on. The entries list the clothing, accessories, and accoutrements supplied to each soldier, and the cost, balanced against the allowance. Thus we see the kind and number of supplies, from trousers, shirts and socks, to blankets, hats and ponchos, that the American volunteers went to war with.

Lot Amendments

Soiling and wear to covers, as may be expected, a few hinges cracked and a few pages coming loose; internally very good overall.
