Description:

Lithographed map, hand-colored in outline, on 4 sheets joined together. 51x69 cm. (20x27").

Detailed German map of the U.S. as political boundaries were in flux, and the state and territorial boundaries are creative. "Tejas" is listed as state (with its area and population given), the border between the U.S. and Mexico is in pre-Gadsden configuration, and the U.S. border in the northwest has retreated to its present location. Warren Heckrotte notes that "The towns in interior northern California are: Himthof; Neu Mecklenburg; Bute City; Yuba; Ota; Braccia (where Marysville is; it means arm in Italian); Sacramento; Nueva Helvetia; and in the south, Stokton. The locations of many Indian Tribes are shown."

Provenance: PBA, 12/15/05

References: Tooley, Dictionary (revised) lists Handtke, German Cartographer, and cites many of his works but not any of NA. Not in Wheat W-GR or W-TW.
