Description:

iv, [4], 268 pp. (8vo) original blindstamped brown cloth, spine lettered in gilt. First Edition, first issue.

First issue without a printed rule above the printer's name on verso of title page and with the numeral "2" printed on the lower margin of p. 17; however there are no advertisements. Contains five speeches by Lincoln and three speeches by Douglas, also a correspondence between the two before their famous debates, and seven debate speeches from each including one rejoinder speech made by Lincoln and then Douglas throughout the seven debate speeches. Howes calls this "historically the most important series of American political debates." Howes L338.
