Issued by the United States Geological Survey under the directorship of Clarence King. The plates include the mining district as a whole, plus sections, diagrams, cross-views, etc., of the various shafts. Printed by Julien Bien & Co. Lith., New York. Bookplate of the Essex Institute (presented by the U.S. Geological Survey) on front pastedown endpaper, no internal library markings.
