The Virginia convention for deliberating the adoption of the new U.S. Constitution is considered the longest and most intense of the state Constitutional debates. The outcome was not a sure thing, as the final 89 to 79 vote tally indicates, and the discussion was dominated by Patrick Henry, who was vehemently opposed to the adoption of the Constitution, feeling that it was "the most fatal plan that could possibly be conceived to enslave a free people."
