Rare map of the western United States at a critical juncture both in political divisions and in the growth of geographic knowledge. Wheat notes that the map was primarily based on Fremont’s 1845 map, and adds that “the map was one of the earliest to depict the finally-determined Oregon boundary.” The map is also of significance in that it was useful to the many immigrants who crossed the plains from 1847 through the gold rush. The map was first issued in Sage’s Scenes in the Rocky Mountains (1846), with a remainder issue in the 1847 Syracuse edition of J.C. Fremont's Narrative of the Exploring Expedition to the Rocky Mountains. It is not know from which source the present example came. Wheat Transmississippi 527.
