Title:
Contes et nouvelles en vers

Author:
La Fontaine, [Jean de]

Place:
Paris

Publisher:
Didot Jeune

Date:
1796

Description:

2 volumes. xvi, 232; xii, 268, [4] pp. Illustrated with 80 (+24) engraved plates after the drawings of Eisen. (8vo), 23x15 cm (9x5¾"), original blue marbled wrappers, untrimmed. Housed in two custom red morocco-backed slipcases.

For 24 of the plates in this copy, there is an extra print of the plate on laid paper laid in. Three of the plates are laid in on laid paper only, without the bound versions on wove paper. Charles-Dominique-Joseph Eisen (1720-1778) was a wonderful rococo draughtsman, and these volumes are full of his very charming and frequently salacious illustrations. His first significant commission was to illustrate a volume celebrating the betrothal of the Dauphin Louis to Maria Theresa of Spain; and he became primarily known for his book illustration. Benezit notes that Eisen is best-known for his drawings, and notably those reproduced in this splendid work.
