Herr Vogt

Marx, Karl

A. Petsch

viii, 191 pp. (8vo) modern rose cloth. Original wrappers not retained. First Edition.

Rare first edition of Marx's defense of his political writings in response to slander leveled against himself, his colleague and co-author of The Communist Manifesto and other works Friedrich Engels, as well as their supporters, by Karl Vogt in his pamphlet Mein Prozess gegen die Allgemeine Zeitung (1859). Marx took the better part of a year off from the writing of Das Kapital to address Vogt's accusations. R.A. Archer in the preface to his 1982 translation of Herr Vogt relates that Vogt "reached for the foulest slanders against Communists ... [alleging] that they engaged in secret and violent conspiracies and that Marx acted among them like a dictator. In this book Marx answers Vogt line for line and charge for charge ... [and] spares neither wit nor invective in demolishing his opponent."

Lot Amendments

A fragile production, very prone to staining and browning, as with this copy, light chipping in the outer margin of about a dozen leaves near the front, without loss of text; very good in a fine modern cloth binding.
