Fale, Thomas

Imprinted by Felix Kyngston

[4], 60, [16] leaves. A-Q⁴, R⁴, R-T⁴. Black letter & roman type. Numerous wood-engraved diagrams by Jodocus Hondius; woodcut initials and headpieces. The final 16 leaves comprise a table of sines. (4to) 18.2x13.2 cm (7½x5½"), later half calf & marbled boards.

Early and scarce horological and mathematical work by the English mathematician Thomas Fale (fl.1604). First published in 1593; this is apparently the third edition, with same imprint and collation as the 1626 edition that preceded it. When issued in 1593, the table of sines at the end of the work was probably the earliest specimen of a trigonometrical table printed in England.

Lot Amendments

Some rubbing and wear to covers, spine ends chipped, joints tender; some foxing, soiling and dampstaining to contents, two marginal repairs to title page; very good overall.
