Letter from Albert Einstein to physicist, astronomer, and author Kenneth Heuer regarding distribution of heavy metals on the surface of Earth

Einstein, Albert

Princeton, NJ

October 20, 1952

Typed letter signed A. Einstein, 21 lines, on paper with Einstein's address stamped in blind. 18x21.5 cm (11x8½").

Interesting letter written in the latter years of the life of the great theoretical physicist, offering commentary on speculative questions raised by Kenneth Heuer, then a lecturer at the Hayden Planetarium. Albert Einstein writes, in part: "I must confess that I feel unable to judge the plausibility of your opinion concerning the cause of the uneven distribution of the heavier metals on the surface of our planet. The uneven distribution could be explained only by the assumption that those masses came to the earth as big meteors. In this case it seems doubtful how the thin crust could stand such shock... In my opinion the relative probability of the different possible explanations can be judged only by persons experienced in geology. Furthermore, Arhennius' hypothesis about the interstellar traffic of life seems to me very improbable. I feel therefore quite unable to give any judgement about the planned content of your work..."
