324 pp. With 4 lithographed plates; folding lithographed map. (8vo) 23x14 cm (8¾x5¼") original green blind-stamped cloth, gilt spine. First English Edition.

With the armorial bookplate of Michael Holland. English edition of Fremont's most famous and influential work, often republished, presenting to the public the newly discovered American West. The map in this edition is that of Robert Greenhow, "Map of the Western & Middle Portions of North America, to illustrate the History of California, Oregon, and the other Countries, on The North West Coast of America..." 58x64 cm. The map was also issued in "The Claim of the United States to Oregon." Wagner-Camp only calls for two plates in this edition, The American Falls of Lewis Fork as the frontispiece, and Hill of Columnar Basalt on the Columbia River. This copy has those, as well as Devil's Gate and The Pyramid Lake. Howes F370; Sabin 25841; Wagner-Camp 115:6; Wheat Transmississippi 512.

Condition:
Wear and soiling to binding, darkening to spine, corners bumped; front hinge cracked, rear starting, title page and frontispiece nearly detached, one other plate detached but present, scattered foxing, affecting some plates and map, repair and 4" closed tear to map; good or better.

Invoices are sent out the day following the auction and include a minimum $10 handling fee plus actual shipping and insurance charges.
