Nicollet accompanied Fremont's 1839 expedition to the upper Missouri. He departed St. Louis on April 4 and arrived at Fort Pierre on June 12, with Etienne Provost and William Dixon (son of the interpreter at Fort Pierre, Baptiste Dorion). The present work is Nicollet's report of that event, although he died before the expedition was completed. His "Sketch of the Early History of St. Louis" appears on pages 75-92. The map, "Hydrographical Basin of the Upper Mississippi River From Astronomical and Barometrical Observations Surveys and Information.," lacking from this copy, is the first detailed modern depiction of the Great Lakes region and the primary source for the area at that time.
