[2], 148, [2]; [2], [149]-280, 14; 160 pp, With 212 hand-colored copper-engraved plates from paintings by Bernard Picart, Gerard Hoet and Jacob Houbrahen, 29 of them double-page; title pages with colored pictorial vignettes; colored engravings in the text, head and tailpieces and initials. (folio) 44.2x28 cm (17½x11"), later half brown morocco & cloth, spines tooled & lettered in gilt, raised spine bands, mottled endpapers.

Superbly illustrated 18th century folio Dutch Bible, with spectacular hand-colored engraved plates, some double-page, depicting in graphic and at times lurid detail the scenes and events of the Old and New Testaments. Bernard Picart, the most notable of the three important artists that provided the illustrations, is renowned today for his masterful depictions of religious ceremonies and iconography from around the globe, and is described by John Harthan, in The History of the Illustrated Book, as "a man of vast industry, training many engravers and illustrating books of all kinds." The plates have captions in the lower margins in Hebrew, English, German, Latin, French and Dutch. Provenance: Greg and Jeanine Newman.

Lot Amendments
Some wear to covers and fading to cloth; just occasional minor damp or mildew stains within, mostly marginal and not detracting from the magnificence of the plates; very good or better.

We have a full service shipping department to ensure proper packing and safe delivery of purchases at reasonable cost. We are specialists at packing and shipping books and works on paper.   All lots purchased by the same client are combined for shipping in order to keep the cost as economical as possible.  Our preferred method for domestic shipments is UPS Ground but we can also ship via FedEx or USPS Priority Mail.  For international orders we select the most appropriate carrier depending on the value and weight of the items purchased.  We are happy to accommodate special arrangements by request.

Invoices are sent out the day following the auction and include a minimum $10 handling fee plus actual shipping and insurance charges.
