Spiral-bound (metallic and plastic) in original stiff wrappers. Approximately 7 x 9.5”, varying in length from 16pp. (the smallest, in 1930) to an average of 35-49pp. Most with front- and/or rear-cover color art, text illustrations and some full-page plates. Typography is also distinctive, designed by French master poster artist A.M.Cassandre and Alfred Latour. Classic imprints, issued over nearly half a century which set the stage for decoration by famed French artists of fine wine labels and advertising.
Long runs of the Nicolas catalogs rarely appear on the American market. A complete run of the 47 catalogs brought 12000 Euros at Paris auction in 2011; a set lacking 9 issues brought 10,675 Euros at another Paris house in 2016.
Cassandre himself is credited with designing some of the illustrations, including the particularly distinctive Deco issue of 1930, with gilt-metallic covers and two futuristic photographic plates. Other notable artists who contributed to the catalogues offered in this group were Edy LeGrand, Jean Hugo, Alfred Latour, Darcy, Galanis, Dignimont, C.Erikson, Rihaku Harada, Berthomme Saint-Andre, Leon Gischia, Roland Oudot, and Constantin Terechkovitch (Kostia)
The Draeger firm that printed these Catalogues was renowned for producing many of the masterpieces of the 20th century French artistic printing, both in poster and book form, including the work of Iribe, Lepape, Cassandre, Carlu, Cocteau, Braque, Dali, Magritte and Picasso.
