Carte von Californien von M. Costanso 1770

Costansó, Miguel

Copper-engraved map. 33x30.4 cm (13x12"), loose in corner mounts in a sunken mat, framed under plexiglass.

Rare German edition of Costansó's landmark map of the coast of California, which, when first published in Spain in 1771 (or perhaps a bit later), was the first printed map to show San Francisco Bay. There was also an English issue of the map published in 1790. Both the Spanish and English version are larger, and extend farther north, than this German version, which terminates just north of San Francisco Bay. All three of these early publications of the map are very rare, and this German edition perhaps the rarest of all. OCLC/WorldCat does not list any separate holdings of the map, and only one copy, at Yale, of the 32-page German printing of Costansó's narrative with which the map was issued, "Bericht von Spanischen Expeditionen zur See und zu Land nach dem nördlichen Californien in den Jahren 1768, 1769, 1770," in Bruns' "Repositorium für die neueste Geographie, Statistik und Geschichte..." The narrative is listed as no. 49 in the Edward Eberstadt Catalogue 119, The Northwest Coast, and as no. 149b in Henry Wagner's The Spanish Southwest.
