First Edition, presentation copy with the extra plate rarely found. Inscribed at half-title: “T. Percy Fox. With the Author's very kind regards, Bredenburg Court, June 18, 1884”. This is a transcript of a journal made on a tour of North America in the spring and summer of 1883 by three Englishmen who were gathering information to help English farmers who were considering emigration. They spent time in Salt Lake City, Yosemite, and Los Angeles before heading north to investigate British Columbia, Montana, Dakota Territory, and Western Canada. The presence of the facsimile pictograph is remarkable. According to a printed statement on its verso, Barneby was given the document in July, 1883, as he was passing through an area of Canada populated by Cree Indians. Intending to reproduce it in this book, Barneby later sent it to Winnipeg to be translated; but his agent then apparently sold the item to a local museum instead of returning it. Barneby finally recovered it in December, 1884. His note is dated January, 1885, well after the publication of the book; so it is to be presumed that he had this spectacular illustration inserted into copies issued, or presented, thereafter. The pictograph is apparently a record kept by a Cree chief of negotiations with white settlers and supplies received from them from 1873 to 1877. Barneby's descendants put the virtually unique document up at auction in London in December, 2000; it sold for a total of 43,000 pounds sterling.
