A desperate fund-raising appeal (”our treasury is exhausted”) by Americas first and foremost anti-war organization, founded after the War of 1812. The group now found the country again at war, well aware of the unpopularity of its dissent from the dominant spirit of flag-waving nationalism:  “…how loudly our times are calling for effort in the cause of Peace… We are now engaged in a war which every man must deplore; and though we may not be able to do much more  than we already have to hasten its termination, we think it quite possible and very desirable to turn the history of its follies, crimes and woes, into effectual warnings against  resorts to the sword in future… we shall in due time spread through the whole land, an able impartial Review of the War, as a dissuasive from similar evils hereafter, and a practical plea for Peace… circulating our publications over the entire West, as the hot-bed of future wars to our country..”
