[12], 47, [1], 80, 84, [12]; [16], 212, [24] pp. Volume one with 8 copperplate engravings including 2 folding; 1 folding map, 1 illustration in the text; volume two with large folding engraved map, 15 maps in the text (one a small folding plate), & 42 profiles & sketch maps in the text. (4to) 22x16.5 cm. (8¾x6½"), period calf, rebacked with modern calf. Volume one is the second edition in English, volume two is the first edition in English.

The most famous book on pirates. The author was a buccaneer under Sir Henry Morgan, and his account is both graphic and picturesque. Bucaniers of America "forms the basis of all the popular accounts of Morgan" (DNB). With the exception of a few instances where he speaks of the extraordinary exploits of the English under Morgan, he has taken no sides, and is as prone to criticize his leader, as any individual on the opposite side. For the present copy, the first volume is the second edition, published the same years as the first edition, and contains extra, previously unpublished, matter on Captain Cook and Captain Sharp not in the first edition. A rare and important account.
