Ainsworth, trained as a surgeon, was in 1836 appointed surgeon and geologist to the expedition to the River Euphrates under Francis Rawdon Chesney. The author was the younger cousin of the English novelists William Harrison Ainsworth, who asked him to add Francis to his name to avoid confusion.
