Grammatica Linguae Anglicanae.
Wallis, John
G. Bowyer and A. Millar

xxxv, [1], 281, [2] pp. With engraved portrait frontispiece and Hollis' catalogue of the literature of liberty. Smoke print of binder's emblem Liberty on final leaf. (8vo), 21x12 cm (8x5"), full red morocco with gilt figure of Britannia on top board, an owl on the bottom board, vertical gilt lettering and caduceus on spine strip, marbled endpapers and edges. Edition Sexta.

Scarce copy in the proper Hollis binding. Inscription on second blank leaf reads: "This book was printed at the expense of Mr. Holles, who sent some copies to me abroad in the year 1766 for the use of learned foreigners. E. [signature cut out] See Bowyer's Anecdotes."  The note refers to Vol. 9 of Bowyer's Literary Anecdotes which observes "To this volume is prefixed a Portrait of Dr. Wallis, finely copied by Basire from that drawn by Cipriani, for Mr. Hollis's Edition of the Doctor's English Grammar."

This sixth edition of Wallis' grammar intended for foreign learners was one of several works edited and distributed by Thomas Hollis for "the protection and advancement of English liberty." The smoke print records one of the emblematic tools cut by Thomas Pingo for Hollis' bindings, the second set used after the first was destroyed by fire in 1764.  Front pastedown with the decorative bookplates of George Gostling and J.R.P. Forrest. The signature of E. Gordon Duff, dated 1919, appears on the verso of the flyleaf. The signature is likely to be that of misanthropic English bibliographer, Edward Gordon Duff.
