Four quarto volumes, about 11.25 inches (28.5 cm) tall. The first two volumes published by Macmillan are in coarse white buckram stamped in gilt; the last two volumes published by Emperor Press are in gilt stamped tan cloth. The first two volumes are unpaginated but there are 918 captioned color plates (most full-page) reproduced from watercolors. The second two volumes, covering the uniforms of the allies and enemies of Napoleon, contains 640 pages over the two volumes, almost all containing a full page color plate. illustrated by Herbert Knötel.
