Cannery Row

Steinbeck, John

New York

Viking Press

(8vo) original canary-yellow cloth, dust jacket. Fourth Printing.

Presentation copy inscribed and signed in pencil by John Steinbeck, to Dr. Forest M. Hinkhouse, on the front free endpaper, "For Hink, Viva Mexico, Mexico uber alles, John Steinbeck." Dr. Hinkhouse (1925-2004) was an art historian and museum administrator. Small rubberstamp of the American Book Store, Ave. Madero 25, Mexico City, to rear pastedown. It may presumed, or at least speculated, that "Hink" bought the book while vacationing in Mexico, and Steinbeck inscribed it to him while they were sharing margaritas at a dive bar near the book store.

The first, second, third, and fourth printings were all published in January, 1945.
