Hayakawa was born in Japan, came to America as a teenager, graduated from the University of Chicago, began acting in films in 1914, and had a brilliant cinematic career that stretched over a half century, nominated for an Academy Award 30 years later for his role in "Bridge on the River Kwai".

This potboiler – set in China, rather than Japan – was his only novel. He wrote one other book, a Zen Buddhist autobiography, in 1960, a year before he returned to Japan, where he remained until his death in 1973.

The year of his film debut, Hayakawa married Tsuru Aoki, another Japanese immigrant to California  and adoptive daughter of Toshio Aoki, the first successful Japanese American artist and illustrator.  (1890 -95 listing above). A celebrity in her own right, she was the first Asian American woman film star before Anna May Wong.
