Place:
New York

Nisei Progressives

1952
Description:

8.5 x 14”. Unbound as issued, with title page in English, Introduction page by Charles Keller and 15 full-page black-and-white woodcuts, loose-leaf in printed paper portfolio with front-cover paste-on color woodcut and title in Japanese.

The woodcuts, from a Tokyo exhibition of leftist Japanese artists, have social themes such as a coal mine strike, May Day parade, oppressed  farmers and workers. Rare, WorldCat locating only three institutional copies in the US.

The Nisei Progressives who distributed this portfolio in the United States were young California Japanese-American “radicals”, affiliated with left-wing labor unions, who supported Henry Wallace’s 1948 Progressive Party campaign for the Presidency, which had the quiet support of the the American Communist Party. After T.S.Tsiang’s 1930s Chinese-American novels, another scarce example of pre-1970 “radical” Asian-American imprints.
