The Red Cord A Romance of China

Springer, Thomas Grant

New York

302 pages. Introduction by John Luther Long. Illustrated with 6 full-page black-and-white plates by S.Y.Pang. (8vo), original orange decorative cloth,  as issued with a string bookmark, attached to an old Chinese coin.  First Edition.

The second, and apparently last - book illustrated by Pang, the first Chinese-American book illustrator.  Long, humorous inscription by the author to Gertrude Emerson, editor of Asia magazine and an authority on the Far East.

The mildly racist inscription reads: “Oh honorable and worshipful [?] (which in the language of the Western Barbarians means Master of Letters) I, an humble journeyer in ‘the forest of pencils” kowtow before you and abjectly present my unworthy efforts to your August notice,,,"  The introduction by Long, author of the novel that became the basis for Puccini’s "Madame Butterfly", describes Springer's book as a Chinese version of Sinclair Lewis' :"Main Street".
