Inscribed on the front free endpaper by Saroyan to David Battan, major West Coast autograph, rare document, and rare book dealer. In the inscription, Saroyan explains why he refused the Pulitzer Prize for the work: "Fresno Saturday December 13, 1980 - For David Battan - as for why I did not accept the Pulitzer Prize, it's very simple  - I am a writer, not a hundred-yard-dash runner, besides one must know those who give a gift, & I don't know to this day who offered the prize - it's all right . William Saroyan." The first play to win both the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the New York Drama Critics Circle Award.

David Battan (1937-1987) was well known in Fresno, a major West Coast autograph, rare document and rare book dealer. He had also written a well received book on Handwriting Analysis, for which William Saroyan wrote a holograph foreword. He and Saroyan were very good friends, and Battan was working on a Saroyan biography at the time of his death.
