Campaigning in Kaffirland: or Scenes and Adventures in the Kaffir War of 1851-2

King, Capt. W.R.

Saunders and Otley

x, [2], 329, [3] + 4 ad pp. Illustrated with five duotone lithographs and additional wood engravings in text. (8vo) 20.2x12.5 cm (8x5"), red cloth lettered on spine in gilt, gilt stamp to front cover, apparently re-cased in the original binding. First Edition.

A narrative of the author's involvement, with his 78th Highlanders Brigade, in the Cape Frontier Wars, or Kaffir Wars. Technically this would have been the eighth Kaffir (or Xhosa) War, within a larger conflict that spanned one hundred years of South African history (1779-1879). The Kaffir wars were one of the most prolonged struggles by indigenous peoples against European colonization.

Lot Amendments

Cover worn with light chipping and fraying at spine ends, lettering fading, soiling to boards; some foxing to pages and plates, ΒΌ" closed tear to preface page at foot; very good.
