Complete in 6 volumes. (8vo), original blue cloth, gilt spines, top edges gilt; custom paper-covered board slipcases with handwritten spine labels.

Presentation copy, with bound in note from Bancroft  in volume 1 to Charles Nordhoff, dated 3 June, 1885, Washington D.C., noting that he is sending the 3rd and 4th volumes and recommends ordering the other 4 volumes to complete the collection. A second note by Bancroft is bound in the volume as well, dated 1862 and labeled "private" in the top margin. The recipient of the note has been excised.  The note begins by stating "about 1/4 of the [crew?] who won the battle for Lake Erie for Perry were black men.
