xii, 220 pp. Edited by Ayresome Johns with an introduction by R.A. Gilbert. 12 full-page or 2/3 page B&W plates by W.T. Horton. (4to) 30x21cm (11¾x8¼") black cloth, spine lettered in gilt, pictorial jacket. Limited edition for private circulation, numbered 3 of 4.

Inscribed "orig/. art for p 199 / Varney the Vampire #99 / Sweeney Todd #45 / and most of text only #10." There is no signature of the editor, however. "This study concentrates on the earlier period of the penny dreadful: sensational fiction in penny parts written principally for the Victorian lower classes, at a time when they were flocking to the towns in search of work and prosperity. The term 'penny dreadful' is used generally to apply to all such fiction, from its roots in chapbooks and the gothic novel in the 1830s, to its decline into schoolboy adventure stories up to about 1910. The term 'penny blood' applies to the earlier literature discussed here..." Antiquarian Magazine, Vols. We are specialists at packing and shipping books and works on paper.   All lots purchased by the same client are combined for shipping in order to keep the cost as economical as possible.  Our preferred method for domestic shipments is UPS Ground but we can also ship via FedEx or USPS Priority Mail. We do NOT ship USPS Media Mail under any circumstances.For international orders we select the most appropriate carrier depending on the value and weight of the items purchased.  We are happy to accommodate special arrangements by request.

Invoices are sent out the day following the auction and include a minimum $10 handling fee plus actual shipping and insurance charges.
