Professor Carey covered just about every inch of ground on the scientific arts, from how to preserve seaweed to how to manufacture borax glass. There are all sorts of recipes herein, include Tomato Figs, Strawberry Cake, “Saloon and Bar-room Stock Syrup”, trial assay of ores (important in Gold Rush era San Francisco), White Spruce Beer, Spanish fritters, etc. WorldCat finds just 3 copies in U.S. libraries. Extremely early for recipes for bar-room stock syrups, as this was published slightly later than Jerry Thomas' Bon Vivant's Companion.
