Les Oiseaux les plus remarquables par leurs formes et leurs couleurs

Traviès, Édouard

Paris and London

Victor Delarue or E. Gambart & Co.

Title page + 54 (of 79) color lithographed plates finished by hand and heightened with gum arabic. (Oblong folio) 34.5x50 cm (13½x19½"), period leather-backed boards, marbled endpapers.

A series of exquisitely rendered bird portraits, set in natural habitats. Édouard Traviès was one of the best known natural history illustrators of 19th century France. "Some of the plates are simply wonderful, and are among the best portraits of birds ever painted" McGill/Wood, p. 601. It appears that this rare volume was issued serially as a suite of plates, in various states and at least two editions. Plate 67 "La Pie" is found in two editions: printed by Becquet, or (as here) Lemercier; the publishers' names also vary and no precedence has yet been determined. Copies rarely contain the full run of plates, and the title page is itself quite scarce..

Lot Amendments

Binding worn, with a few tape repairs; a number of plates detached, some plates toned, occasional foxing in margins, plates 9 and 45 creased, plate 27 chipped at edges, occasional stains; image areas fine on nearly all plates; very good overall.
