Most libraries built by business groups in 19th century America became the foundation of the public libraries in the cities. An interesting look at what was available at the period. The first such catalogue, published in 1854, had fewer than 4000 volumes. The second, in 1861, showed almost 14,000. This one contains over 36,000 volumes. Previous owner name and address on front endpaper along with a later owner bookplate covering a piece of the previous entry. A note in ink from the first owner detailing where and how he received the book together with comments of its usefulness on the title page.

Donated by Gallagher Books, Denver, CO.
