Lewis Francis Hadley was linguist who lived in the Indian Territory in the late Victorian period. He made developed a sign language for common use between the Plains Indian tribes, most of whom spoke different languages. Hadley's aim as to make missionary work easier by creating a common sign language. He was also the author of "Indian sign talk. Being a book of proofs of the matter printed on equivalent cards..."
