[24] ff. With 115 mounted ink and pencil drawings.13x10", hand stitched blank book, later prepared for binding with the addition of double folio endsheets, head and tail bands, and cloth mull. Sketches range in size from 2¼x2" to 7¾x4¾". Typically four or five sketches per page.
Substantial collection of 115 original drawings and sketches done in the Art Deco style by German-American artist Heinrich Arad Schmidt.
Drawings mostly depict human faces and heads drawn in a distinct rectilineal style. Some of the imagery incorporates religious themes: Christ, various saints, and other religious figures are present. There are also a number of grotesques, such as gargoyles, which suggest an architectural purpose or usage. All drawings in this collection are clearly emblematic of the Art Deco designs of the 1920s-1930s. A unified and thematic collection.
