Born in South Yorkshire, Thomas Witlam Atkinson became successively a quarryman, stonemason, and architect. Between 1848 and 1853 he travelled some 40,000 miles in Asiatic Russia with his wife Lucy, painting and keeping journals which formed the basis of a number on that part of the world. The lithographs in the present volume are striking examples of his work.
