Letter from Lenny Bruce's agent Jack Sobel, to Bruce, regarding money problems and business disputes

Sobel, Jack

No place

July 22, 1962

Typed letter, signed Jack. 5 pp. Stapled.

A great and lengthy synopsis of money problems and business disputes with Playboy, Fantasy Records, Atlantic Records and engagements generally. In part: “You honestly make it impossible to accomplish things for you… because I never know when you will change the signals… You wear out the patience of the very people you want to have as friends.  You have been… wrong in the way you tried to handle the Playboy matters…wrong in the way you want to play cafes…wrong in the way you are trying to handle your own money…you have no one to blame but yourself... Mike Emery (a real estate agent)… is quite capable to follow through with what you want, if you will only tell him exactly what you want and then LEAVE HIM ALONE.” (Lenny Bruce has here added ink comments: “”ANYBODY CAN DO IT IF YOU TELL THEM WHAT I WANT. I AM PAYING THAT PRICK. LET HIM GUESS.”)  Sobel: “I would not allow you to have any of your paychecks…I would continue to try to keep you on an allowance …you will be in the red if you persist in picking up your own paychecks and in handling your own matters as inconsistent as you have…”

Lot Amendments

Some staining and wear, punchholes in top margins; very god overall.
