64 hand-colored lithographed plates after Frederick William Frohawk (63 of birds, one of eggs) with one facsimile of Ellis's Pennula Sandvicensis. Plates are loose in mattes. Plates: 32x25.5 cm (12½x10"); matted: 49.8 cm x40.5 (19¾x16"). Plates from the First Edition.

A fabulous series of colored plates disbound from the original to create a facsimile edition benefiting the Nature Conservancy of Hawaii. The facsimile edition is offered with these plates. The Facsimile edition is comprised of 60 plates with an accompanying book presented in a rosewood box with cloth cover stamped in gilt. It is no. 94 of an edition of 250. Plates present in this lot that are not in the facsimile edition include: Himatione/Chasiempis, Himatione Aurea, Ciridops Anna, and a third variant of Buteo Solitarius.

Considered to be one of the two great ornithological works on the birds of the Hawaiian Islands. Depicts many species now extinct or endangered due to deforestation and disease. ''The text is comprehensive and the illustrations are very fine examples of Frohawk's careful work. So often, in lithographic work the general effect is one of diffuse colour and lack of definition. Frohawk manages to have crisper, clear-cut profiles of his birds, and there is little woolliness about his bird pictures'' (Jackson).  Sitwell Fine Bird Books, p 157; Jackson Bird Illustrators, p 105; Nissen IVB 1000; Wood, p 631; Forbes 4238. Hawaiian National Bibliography, pp. 384-7.
